Technology Equipped Towards the Transformation from Physical Workplace to Digital Workplace. Yes, this is not a post about SCCM or ConfigMgr.

However, this is more about assessing infrastructure and cultural readiness for a digital transformation. As core technical personnel, we also need to consider future technology roadmaps. Agree?

That is what I’m trying to do with this post. Is the Technology Equipped for the Transformation from a Physical Workplace to a Digital Workplace? Yes, but not to that extent. So, technology needs to have more catching up to deliver the same feeling as a physical workplace.  

Let’s pause momentarily to consider whether technology is entering the digital workplace. Cloud computing, Windows Azure, Windows Intune, Office 365, Lync 2013, etc., I can see that technology is heading down the right path.

Technology Equipped Towards the Transformation

A few years before, we never had online meetings like Lync Online meetings or Webinars; instead, we used to dial into a bridge and attend the meeting. Now, we rarely use a conference bridge. True? Are we moving away from the physical workplace?

Yes, we’re slowly progressing towards a digital workplace. Even we can’t recognize this!! Think about instant messaging (IM), Lync. We can install the Lync smartphone application and connect to our colleagues from home, cafes, trains, or buses. This is also a small example of digitization.

BYOD—Bring Your Device and CYOD—Configure Your Device initiatives within organizations prove we’re moving to a Digital Workplace. Microsoft cloud initiatives are a great path towards a digital workplace—technology Equipped Towards the Transformation.

Simply put, we can access the Windows Intune console anywhere worldwide without connecting to the office network with our device. Isn’t that great? You can perform your day-to-day activities anywhere without connecting to the office network if you’re an Intune administrator.

I think the Digital Workplace is the next revolution in the coming years. We can see this from some examples above. Yes, I know it would be very challenging. And it’s not like we will arrive tomorrow or the day after.

It will take time to get there. Again, for most of us, Internet bandwidth was a real problem a few years ago. How is bandwidth now? It’s much cheaper now, and high bandwidth is available worldwide. I tried working from my village a few weeks ago, and the connectivity was super, and I could achieve what I wanted.

This was not the case a few years ago. I can’t even think of performing work from the village because of connectivity issues and slow VPN connectivity. Now, it’s clear that we don’t want me to complete the job in BIG cities—technology Equipped toward the Transformation from Physical Workplace to Digital Workplace.

Most agricultural work is on farms; most people moved from villages to cities as part of industrialization. Can we return to villages, where we have more resources (real estate and so on) than cities? I don’t know. This would be a possible part of the Digital Workplace and the digital revolution. What do you think?

Digital workplaces can remove Physical restrictions and empower employees to work anywhere. Work is becoming more mobile. In my experience, work mobilization increases productivity. Sometimes, I work from home, and during those days, I tend to work more hours than my regular office hours (work stretching).

There is probably less to worry about during lunch breaks, going to the cafeteria (queueing in for food), tea breaks, and travelling (traffic, etc.). So, on the other hand, I’m much more productive when I work from Home.

The downside of a digital workplace could be working alone, not meeting with people physically, stretching out, work addiction, less sleep, and so on. Isn’t it? So, the next piece is about what the people managers will do when working from remote areas. Do we need managers?

What is the future of Managers? I’m sure managers are needed in the Digital Workplace. 😉 However, managers need to revamp their thinking and have a high level of trust with employees. Most managers don’t do policing these days. How about your managers?

I agree a bit of policing is needed when you’re just out of college 🙂 Do you agree? Managers are not there to observe or watch people INPUT; they should care about or follow what their reporters OUTPUT. What output can they produce?

Some of us had gone through Agriculture change, Industrial change and it seems like it’s time for a digital chance. We never know !
