There is an issue with Intune Connector for Active Directory Setup Fatal Error 0x80070643. There is a known issue with Intune AD connector that is used to facilitate Windows Autopilot Hybrid Azure AD scenarios.

In many Windows Autopilot deployments, Windows 10 or Windows devices are joined to Azure AD. But many organizations still rely on Hybrid Azure AD join. These types of devices are Domain Joined + Azure AD registered.

The Intune Connector for Active Directory is one of the mandatory components for Hybrid Azure AD joined Windows Autopilot scenarios. This tool helps to connect with the Active Directory Domain Controller to perform the Domain Join task.

Why are we talking about Hybrid Azure AD Join? Because we still have organizations using the Hybrid Azure AD Join scenario, also known as Hybrid Domain join, when your on-prem Active Directory is synced with Azure AD using AAD Connect.

Fatal Error 0x80070643 during Intune Connector for Active Directory Setup

I have seen reports on Fatal Error 0x80070643 during Intune Connector for Active Directory Setup. A Twitter user IA reported an issue with Intune Connector for Active Directory Setup on the 3rd of Aug.

I don’t know whether installing Intune connector for AD on a Windows server Core is a popular scenario in the real world. My best guess would be it’s not the one that most organizations use.

It seems there is an issue with DC running on the 2019 Server Core. The Twitter user IA reported the following error when trying to install on Server Core 2019 – “Windows Server 2016 or later is required for this setup to complete.”

Intune Connector for Active Directory Setup failed on Windows 2019 Server Core Operating System with Fatal Error 0x80070643.

  • Setup Failed – One or more issues caused the setup to fail. Please fix the issues and then retry the setup.
  • 0x80070643 – Fatal Error during installation.

Fix or Workaround Fatal Error 0x80070643 Issue

There is no Fix or Workaround Fatal Error 0x80070643 Issue. However, Microsoft is aware of the issue, and the Intune Support team acknowledges that they are looking into it.

I don’t think Microsoft’s top priority is fixing the Intune connector for the Active Directory setup issue on Windows 2019 Server Core. I believe this is because of this scenario’s very limited use case.

The workaround is installing the connector on any other supported server operating systems except Windows 2019 Server Core operating System until Microsoft fixes the issue.
