WSUS Enhancements preview expected soon. The WSUS product is getting more attention from Microsoft. Microsoft plans to put some resources and energy into updating the WSUS products.

Microsoft plans to update WSUS with new features per the Tweet from Gabe Frost. It’s clear that the Windows product team (Windows Update) product is working on getting new features into WSUS. Why are these WSUS enhancements preview only for Windows Client operating systems?

These new features will be only for WSUS standalone products and other third-party products integrated with WSUS. We all know SCCM patching is based on WSUS, and the tweet is clear that they are NOT planning to have any changes in the WSUS if you are already integrated that with SCCM.

WSUS is the product that delivers patches to the Windows Client and Server operating systems. I have seen many organizations still using standalone WSUS for patching servers. Many of them are moved to a puppet or other automation solutions to get the patches apart from SCCM.

Microsoft is pushing most of the organizations away from WSUS to WUfB. The Windows Update for Business (WUfB) only supports the Windows client operating systems such as Windows 11 and Windows 10. On-prem Windows server patching is still a question mark (maybe because of Azure Updates?).
