Microsoft released an advisory for Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Telemetry issues (MDE Telemetry). Users are unable to view full telemetry data from the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint portal.

If you are unable to view the full telemetry data, then you are not alone. There are others also facing this issue in their tenant. This is why Microsoft released an advisory DZ677586 to notify all of the users/tenants impacted by this issue.

As per Microsoft, this issue is impacting only the Microsoft 365 Defender service. Also, Microsoft confirms that Impact is specific to some users served through the affected infrastructure. Microsoft updated that the advisory that this service issue has been fixed. More details below.

Details on Defender for Endpoint Telemetry Issues

The issue is mainly for MDE admins users who cannot view full telemetry data from the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE) portal. As per Microsoft advisory, approximately 50% of machines are experiencing issues sending telemetry data.

Current status: Microsoft is analyzing service telemetry to determine the impact source and develop a mitigation plan by the next update on September 27, 2023, at 10:30 AM GMT.

Scope of impact: Impact is specific to users who are served through the affected infrastructure and attempting to view telemetry data from the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint portal.

FIX and Root Cause

Final status from Microsoft on MDE Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Telemetry Issues: Microsoft identified that network authentication component misconfiguration inadvertently resulted in a section of infrastructure, responsible for facilitating telemetry data in the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint portal, not functioning as expected.

  • Root cause: A network authentication component misconfiguration caused this issue, and it’s fixed now.
