Shotcut was originally generated in November 2004 by Charlie Yates, an MLT co-founder and the original lead developer. Dan Dennedy, another MLT co-founder, the current version, re-designed it.

Dennedy wanted to create a new editor based on MLT and reused the Shotcut name. He wanted to make something that would exercise MLT’s new cross-platform capabilities, especially with the WebVfx and Movit plugins.
