The great news for Microsoft is that the 2023 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management Recognize Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service (aka AKS) as a Leader. This is the first-ever Magic Quadrant (MQ) released by Gartner for Container Management.

As per Gartner’s research, by 2026, the adoption of CSP(content services platform) native platforms will propel 75% of container instances to be deployed within public cloud environments. So, there will be a big push towards public cloud offerings such as Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

The current adoption of public cloud for container management is up from 50% (in 2023). This is going to change as per Gartner’s research and feedback from their clients.

Recently, Gartner released the first-ever Magic Quadrant for Desktop as a Service (DaaS). Microsoft offerings such as AVD (Azure Virtual Desktop) and Windows 365 (Cloud PC) are recognised as the DaaS industry leaders.

2023 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management

The 2023 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management paper is prepared by Dennis Smith, Wataru Katsurashima, Michael Warrilow, Tony Iams, and Richard Watson. Redhat has been kind enough to share the complimentary copy of the report.

This research is based on two pillars: Completeness of vision and Ability to Execute. As per Gartner’s MQ research paper, the standard capabilities for container management include:

  • Container infrastructure
  • Managed provisioning and updates
  • Platform engineering support
  • Application platform capabilities

Microsoft, Google, Red Hat, VMware, Alibaba Cloud, and AWS are the leaders for this year’s MQ. There are no visionaries included in the 2023 MQ for Container Management. More details are available in the below table.

Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)

As per Gartner’s MQ, the primary container service is Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). This service provides various serverless container options, such as the AKS virtual node and Azure Container Apps (ACA).

Microsoft also allows hosting container services outside the Azure public cloud using Azure Stack and Azure Arc services. This is called AKS on Azure Stack HCI and Azure Arc.
